SRC Quizzes for QUARTER 2
Friday, December 14, 2018.
Scholastic Reading Counts! (SRC) is an individual reading comprehension & incentive program. Each child reads a book that he or she has picked out. After reading the book, the child will take a 10-question multiple-choice quiz on that book.
MUST MY CHILD TAKE SRC QUIZZES?
Yes, every elementary student at the Opelousas campus of WCA must take at least one SRC quiz each quarter on a book he or she has read that quarter. In an effort to help challenge and encourage our students to continue to read more, we are requiring that students read a certain number of POINTS instead of BOOKS. The points required for students in each grade level are listed in the chart below:

PRIZES! PRIZES! PRIZES!
Opelousas elementary students receive prizes from the librarian when they read more than the amount of points required for their grade level. The amount of points needed for each prize is listed in the chart below:
|AMOUNT OF POINTS EARNED
|Points for grade level x 5
|Points for grade level x 10
||Check out an extra book from the library
|Points for grade level x 15
||Chooses a book to keep & name goes in a $25 bookstore gift card drawing
|Points for grade level x 20
||Reads to a preschool class of his or her choice
HOW CAN I TELL IF A BOOK IS AN SRC BOOK?
Each SRC book in the Opelousas campus library is labeled with two colored stickers. On each sticker is a handwritten number. This labeling system sets SRC books apart from non-SRC books in our library.
There are four kinds of colored stickers on the books in the library. These colored stickers help students choose books that are appropriate for their grade level. The colored labels and appropriate grade levels are listed in the chart below:
If you choose to have your child read a book from home or another library, you may check online at the SRC catalog
to see if that book has an SRC quiz.
The numbers on the colored stickers help the student choose books that he or she will be successful in reading. The top colored sticker will show the grade level of the book -- the approximate grade level of a student in order to read that particular book. The bottom colored sticker shows the Lexile level of the book. The Lexile level describes the book's difficulty.
